Mechanical Technician
Interconnector Limited operates a bi-directional natural gas pipeline and terminals linking the UK and continental European gas markets. The Interconnector offers a unique commercial service and can import and export large volumes of gas providing flexibility to customers.
We are seeking a Mechanical Technician to join our team in Bacton. The role reports to the IBT Maintenance Manager and is full time and site based, with travel as required for the performance of the role. Working within the Maintenance Team you will carry out day to day activities relating to routine and corrective maintenance of Mechanical plant, equipment and systems. This is a key position within the team and the successful candidate will help to drive a strong safety culture and to promote Interconnectors’ Health, Safety and Environmental goals.
This position is based on dayshifts, Monday to Friday with some ad-hoc overtime working. Flexibility is required to help maintain a 24/7/365 operation.
Key responsibilities/accountabilities
- Assisting the Lead Mechanical Technician in planning the inspection and maintenance of all site mechanical equipment.
- Carrying out planned and unplanned Maintenance at INT Bacton Terminal in accordance with INT processes and procedures.
- Recording of all maintenance activities in the company Electronic maintenance system. Maintenance will be carried out to a set of agreed priorities set in the Maintenance System.
- Respond to emergency call-outs whilst off-shift if required and reasonably able to do so.
- Provide timely information and advice to local management.
- Use of INT Safe System of Work – Risk Assessments, Method Statements, Permits to Work and Isolation Certificates;
- Evaluate work at Bacton Terminal by liaising with Lead Technician, Maintenance personnel and contractors to ensure satisfactory scope, risk & mitigation identification.
- Assist in preparation of method statements, risk assessments and permits to work.
- Carry out isolations within certified competency.
- Inspect and audit others work permits as part of site safety initiatives.
- Testing & commissioning of new and repaired equipment.
- Use Interconnector Safety and other Reporting Systems, including but not limited to: Safety Observations Scheme, Safety Representatives, contribution towards weekly and monthly planning meetings as requested, maintenance reporting system, shutdown lessons learned and participation as required during incident investigation and reporting activities.
- Complete training in line with competency profile, training is applicable to the role and activities to be undertaken.
- Foster a ‘one team’ approach with all other INT entities, working with other departments in INT’s and the team’s best interests.
- Develop and maintain positive and productive relationships with all other INT departments, stakeholders and individuals to maximise safety, efficiency and plant operability.
- Participate in desktop & live emergency exercises and training as requested.
- Assist visiting authority representatives by demonstrating techniques, procedures and records.
- Contribute to development work, including reviews of processes, procedures and completing audit actions.
- Participate in Engineering or Process reviews such as HAZIDs, HAZOPS and other technical reviews as requested and within competency.
- Support of other INT staff and contractors and assist development, by knowledge sharing and technical support, assistance with planning, sharing workload of tasks, analysis and lessons learned.
Knowledge, qualifications, and experience
- NVQ Level 3 in a Mechanical discipline or an Accredited Apprenticeship Program.
- Min 3 years’ experience in oil and gas or similar industry/other hazardous site related maintenance with transferable skills.
- Candidates will preferably demonstrate experience in a similar role as a Mechanical Technician.
- Experience of task risk assessments in Process Safety related environment, ideally in the gas industry.
- Self-motivated, works well with and can manage as required a small team (may include site team members, vendors/contractors).
- Ability to supervise and support contactors and vendors in a positive manner to encourage an open and fair safety and progress reporting culture.
- Proven track record of performing within a multi-disciplined team.
- Understanding of Risk Assessment processes.
- Good standard of computer literacy. Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to develop procedures and practices.
- Must be a good written and verbal communicator.
- Strong track record of delivering on performance targets and will be acknowledged as having the performance qualities to contribute to high performing and diverse teams.
- A strong understanding of safety hazards associated with rotating equipment, including management and mitigation of risks.
